R.C. Boat, 1975, wood and mixed media, 18" x 44" x 8' |
A small plywood boat originally found
in a ruinous condition by the artist's son, Ian and his friend Ted
in the Los Gatos Creek in San Jose. The boat was later rebuilt by the
artist and the text of Robinson Crusoe laminated to the inside and
outside surfaces. The artist found that he happened to own two copies
of the same edition of the book which allowed both sides of each page
to be shown. Only the paper differed in the two texts, causing an interesting
variation in transparency when the pages were immersed in the resin
coating. By a fortunate coincidence, the boat had just enough surface
area, including the seat tops, to display every page of the text. |
